Maggie, Roy and Gabriel ran through our game on Wednesday and apart from a few minor issues with twitter I think it went really well. Because of the limited time a few of the clues were lost in the rush to save the world but this was expected and the clues they missed did not stop them from completing the game. Overall it’s been a full on few weeks trying to juggle world cup madness at work and bulk hand ins for uni.

This semester has definitely had it’s up and downs but I really feel that it ended on a high note. I’m looking forward to having some time off to focus on my own projects but at the same time I’m really excited to see what next year has to offer.

Online Content

21Oct11

Our group had a huge interest in online forms of media which I think really showed when our game was played through on Wednesday. A big part of this online media was our blog. For our blog we were quite limited as we did not have the knowledge or time to create a website from scratch we had to settle for a premade wordpress theme. Even using the free themes I think it turned out really well

You can check the blog out here http://arwresistance.wordpress.com/

We also used a number of QR codes to link to different bits of information.

Ben made some awesome videos showing the beginning of the end of the world in a few of the parallel worlds I think they turned out really well.

He also put together a mock advertisement for our world that was aired in the original world.

Jared did the music for the videos which fitted pretty perfectly and Lee put together a poster which I’ll post as soon as I get a hold of.

St James

13Oct11

We decided quite early in the development stages that we wanted to use the St James theater as a center point for our game. We did this as the St James has a really interesting feel to it that we thought would fit in with our story. Which we feel would add an element of realism to our game.

At the moment our story centers around a slowly deteriorating world and the effort the government of that world is going through to save what’s left of their population. In order to do this they are sending agents into parallel realities trying to find one that they can inhabit but so far every world that they have been to has suffered the same seemingly inevitable fate. That is until they reached ours

AR

08Oct11

In one of the first group discussions we had Maggie she recommended that we focus on the narrative and creating this reality rather than trying to invent a new type of augmented reality technology. Although she said that we are more than welcome to use existing technology as long as it doesn’t take away from the narrative.

With this in mind I’ve had a look at some different AR tools out there.

String was the first one I had a play around with. Using an iPhone app you are able to see 3d models when you use the camera to look at certain images.

The new psp vita’s AR game Reality Fighter is a bit unrelated but it’s cool to see where the technology is going

Unreality

05Oct11

We’re almost a week into our final project for the year and so far it’s been going well. The aim for this project is to create an alternate reality in which a group of people can be taken on a journey spanning across both our reality and the created one. In essence we are creating a game that players complete by doing tasks on the streets surrounding the studio. I’m pretty excited for this project as it gives me a chance to look at the basic elements of game design.

As is the norm with all group projects we began by picking groups. I really wanted to work with some new people for this project and I think I was pretty successful as I am now in a group with four people that I have never worked with. As for group dynamics I think they fairly good at the moment although we are still in the early stages of the project.

Final Design

28Sep11

I’ve finalized  my design and i’m really happy about it. I didn’t however leave myself with nearly enough time to put everything together which i’m kicking myself about now. I ran into a lot of problems while trying to finish my project these ranged from not being able to print on the paper I wanted to the USB not working once I had finished making it. I should have really given myself more time to account for problems that I really should have thought about.

Here are my final designs for the package

And the USB

We’re almost a week into our holidays and despite the RWC build up I’ve managed to get a bit of work done. I think with digital music formats becoming bigger and bigger less people are buying CD’s and in order for a CD to grab a users attention it really has to be unique and special.  Although I found some really amazing CD packages I have really struggled to come up with a way to link our audio track to the design.

I began to look at alternative ways of storing my music files the next way I looked at was on a USB stick. I feel that a USB stick would really fit in with the idea of my audio track which was that technology is taking over. Now I just need to find a way to make my USB look unique and fit the music track even more.

During the design process for my business cards dug up some old websites I remember stumbling on to a few years back. I found that some of the business cards I really liked were the ones that had an element of interaction for example peeling something back to reveal the details.

I’ve tried to do a similar thing with my business cards by having a page half way down the card. The idea being when you pick up the card you see a comical illustration of the problem you are in and when you turn the page over it reveals a solved problem and the details of my client. For one of my concepts for a plumber my initial image was of rising water levels and when you turned the page all the water had flushed away and the plumbers contact details are shown. Quite simple but effective I think.

graphicdesign

30Aug11

We began our latest project by looking at the design process taken while making business cards. After choosing our client’s profession we began to look at symbols and designs that came to mind when we thought of this profession. I think the whole idea of this exercise was to give us a crash course on the graphic design process. Research, come up with concepts, develop concepts and produce a final product. Having not done anything like this since 7th form graphics i’m really looking forward to starting the actual project.
